The English ‘bread riots’ of 1734 had nothing to do with bread. Dissatisfied with their lot, and wanting to topple the monarchy, the rebellious organisers dropped their original slogan, ‘unfasten the yoke of oppression, and join the steadfast band of the justified populace’, because ‘bread riots’ was easier to say, and people liked bread more than the royal family.
