It is widely believed that the Wellington Boot was invented by Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington. This is not true. It was first described in use during the cleaning of the well in the English village of Ington. A document from 1723 states that boots were “being primarily to stop the ingress of water on to the ankles of the villagers”.
